Yes, you are absolutely right. I could have represented the first two parts simply as “I screwed up because I didn’t know enough about the data or the units the authors were likely to have used and rushed in too quickly”. Though the fact I screwed up did lead me down a longer path which was more useful which I recounted in the third.
